A retaining wall has one job: hold back the ground and the water behind it, year after year, without leaning, cracking, or failing. That comes down to what most people never see — the base it sits on, the drainage behind it, and the steel inside it. Get those right and the wall lasts decades. Get them wrong and it's a problem waiting to happen.

We build poured-in-place concrete retaining walls — one continuous, steel-reinforced structure rather than stacked block. For the right site, that's about as strong and long-lasting as a wall gets. And because we excavate as well as pour, we handle the whole job: the dig, the base, the drainage, and the wall itself.

Drainage

Water is what takes a wall down. Without somewhere to go, it builds up behind the wall and the pressure pushes it out over time. We build drainage into every wall — drain rock and weeping tile (perforated pipe) — so water drains away instead of working against the wall.

Foundation

A Solid Base

A wall is only as good as what it sits on. We dig down to solid ground and build on a properly compacted base, so the wall doesn't settle, crack, or lean once the load is behind it.

Behind the Wall

Granular Backfill

We backfill with clean granular material, not the native clay that came out of the hole. Clay holds water and swells; gravel drains and stays put — which keeps pressure off the wall.

Poured concrete walls are reinforced with steel and built with the right footing so they stand up to the load behind them for the long haul.

Height, Permits & the BC Building Code

As a rule of thumb, shorter residential walls — generally under about 1.2 metres (4 feet) — can usually be built without an engineered design. Once a wall goes taller than that, the BC Building Code and most municipal bylaws call for an engineered design and a building permit.

When an engineered or permitted wall is needed, we work with you and a qualified engineer to get it built to spec and to code — so the wall is done right and you're covered.
